These visas are for skilled individuals or families wishing to relocate to Australia permanently to fill Australia's skills shortage. General Skilled Migration (GSM) is a points-based, occupation dependent process for highly skilled individuals. There are two main subclasses, being the Skilled (Subclass 189) or State Sponsored (Subclass 190).
The main difference between the two subclasses is that subclass 189 is restrictive on occupations and therefore an applicant must be suitably qualified and select an occupation from a specific list prescribed under legislation. Whereas subclass 190 is state dependent. Each Australian state has its own list of occupations depending on the demand in the region. There is more scope with occupations and applicants can claim an additional five points.
To apply for one of these visas you must have 65 points, points can be claimed for numerous factors such as age, English proficiency, work experience, qualifications and more.
An expression of interest (EoI) can be submitted if there is a positive skilled assessment, and the minimum number of points is achieved. A crucial part of the process is that you cannot proceed to a subclass 189 or 190 without being invited through the EoI. When an invitation arrives, only then can we proceed with the visa application submission.
GSM is a complex and lengthy process, which is also very competitive due to the limited number of ‘invitations’’ issued per year.
